Avenue Antiques will be hosting a Maryland Women author's book signing in honor of Women's History Month and the first anniversary of the Congressional Gold Medals awarded to the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots). Avenue Antiques has lined up several interesting authors including Amy Nathan, author of Yankee Doodle Gals, a book geared to a teen audience. They are hoping to have at least one Woman Airforce Service Pilot present at this signing. Ms. Nathan will also be bringing copies of several of her other books including Count On Us, the history of women in the military from the Revolutionary War to Iraq, and Take a Seat-Make a Stand, about Sarah Keys Evans whose civil rights stance took place three years before Rosa Parks. Lauren Silberman, who is researching a book on Wicked Baltimore, will be signing copies of her book, The Jewish Community of Baltimore. Connie Reeves, a former military helicopter pilot; has written two novels: The Elimination Game and Hawthorne Cottage. Tammy Duckworth at 10 a.m. March 8, in Room 221 of Elkton Station. Nominated by President Obama to serve in her current position, Duckworth was confirmed by the Senate on April 22, 2009 and sworn in two days later. As assistant secretary, she represents and advises the secretary of veterans affairs on matters relating to media and public affairs. She directs departmental communications and oversees programs relating to intergovernmental relations, homeless veterans, consumer affairs, and the department's six national rehabilitative special event programs. The Ausherman Family Foundation, Rotary Club of Carroll Creek and Hood College have teamed up to bring Frederick’s First International Women’s Day Celebration to All Saints’ Episcopal Church on March 8, 2011. Although 2011 is the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, this non-denominational celebration will be the first of its kind in Frederick. The event will feature The Glow Project Movie, and will benefit the Women of Hope Project, a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2001 whose mission is to free families in war-torn Afghanistan from poverty and oppression by providing a hand-up vs. a hand-out. Originally established for women by women to help them build businesses and become self-sustaining, vocational training is now offered to men, and hundreds of children have returned to school. The AAUW College Park welcomes speaker Holly Kearl, a National Street Harassment expert, writer, and nonprofit professional based in the Washington, D.C. area. Ms. Kearl's work has been cited by United Nations, CNN, Washington Post and many other publications. She is the author of Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe and Welcoming for Women and Girls. Ms. Kearl is also a Senior staff member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Ms. Kearl's book draws on the experiences of more than 800 women from 23 countries. It explores the societal contexts in which street harassment occurs, and the role of factors such as race and sexual orientation. This book offers strategies on how to address and end harassment. Mary Lynne Carraway oversees the operation of fifty-seven of the most successful Domino's Pizza stores in the system. Ms. Carraway's ascension to President of Team Washington did not follow a typical career path. She attended Brigham Young University, worked in hotels and entertainment and spent 10 years in the fashion industry. She thought she had found her dream job when she married David Carraway, and they started their family. In 2004, Frank Meeks, founder of Team Washington, Inc. passed away. Two and a half years after he took over the company, her husband, David, lost his battle with brain cancer. The growing segments of the Hispanic population, according to the U.S. Census, are 29.3 million Mexican Americans, 4.1 million Puerto Ricans, 1.5 million Cuban Americans and 1.2 million Dominicans.
The Clearinghouse on Women's Issues will host a panel discussion addressing the issues that affect these women; challenges facing young girls in these populations; and the collaboration or lack of contact with major feminist organizations. The panel also will review the development of Hispanic women’s organizations in the United States. Carmen Delgado Votaw, member of the Clearinghouse on Women’s Issues and member, Board of Directors of the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, Inc., will moderate the panel discussion. Alma Morales Riojas, President and CEO of MANA, a Latina organization, will speak about Mexican American and other Latina women.
