"Women Who Changed the Face of Maryland" Reception

Maryland Life magazine and the Maryland Women's Heritage Center hosted a special complimentary reception to honor 10 women who have changed the face of Maryland, as well as outstanding women business leaders, as featured in the July/August 2010 issue of the magazine.
Influential Maryland women who were honored were Carmen Delgado Votaw, a national and international leader in civil rights and women's rights, founder of the National Association of Puerto Rican Women; Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland's "first lady of education," leading Maryland's schools to #1 status in the nation; Rachel Carson, zoologist, author and ecologist, considered the Mother of the modern environmental movement; Jill Moss Greenberg, a leader in civil, women's, disability and human rights and educational equity, founder of the Maryland Women's History Project; Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, visionary and founder of the unique American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM); Claire McCardell, renowned fashion designer and creator of women's sportswear; Alta Schrock, pioneer in preserving Mennonite and mountain crafts and culture, founded the Springs Historical Society and the Penn Alps Restaurant and Craft Shop; Pauli Murray, Civil rights activist, feminist, lawyer, author, educator, co-founder of NOW, and first African-American female Episcopal priest; Harriet Ross Tubman, conductor on the Underground Railroad, known as the Moses of her People; and Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint.
