The mission of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center is to preserve the past, understand the present, and shape the future by recognizing, respecting, and transmitting the experiences and contributions of Maryland women of diverse backgrounds and regions.

Women’s History Month Event Celebrates Women’s Leadership at FSU


To expand our knowledge of the outstanding leaders of Maryland's past and present, the Heritage Center will honor women who have been inducted into the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame. The inductees include historical and contemporary individuals from diverse backgrounds and areas of accomplishment from across the state.

  • Dr. Emily Wilson Walker
Admiral Grace Hopper
Developed COBOL computer language
Harriet Tubman
Led the Underground Railroad, bringing hundreds from slavery to freedom
Mary Katherine Goddard
Published the first signed copy of the Declaration of Independence
Dr. Helen Brooke Taussig
Co-developed the "blue baby" heart surgery that saved thousands of lives
Margaret Brent
Fought for the right to vote as a woman in 1648.

Henrietta Szold
Founded schools for American immigrants, laying the foundation for modern-day Adult Education

Mary Lemist Titcomb
Founded the bookmobile, bringing literacy to rural communities

Mary Young Pickersgill
Made the famous Star Spangled Banner that flew over Ft. Mc Henry during the war of 1812

Anna Ella Carroll
Served as military adviser to President Lincoln
Frances Watkins Harper
Published some of the first African American poetry in the U.S.
