The Maryland Women’s Heritage Center Executive Board includes women and men from across the State of Maryland who are working to make the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center a reality.

Jill Moss Greenberg
Executive Director of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center

Jill Moss Greenberg is currently the Executive Director of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center. She was named to the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame in 1995.

 

She represented Prince George’s County on the Maryland State Commission for Women and led in the creation of the Prince George’s County Commission for Women. She founded the Maryland Women’s History Project and played a significant role in the passage of the Maryland Equal Rights Amendment, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and Title IX. She served on the Maryland Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and worked to create the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday.

 

She co-founded the Maryland and Prince George’s County Women’s Political Caucuses, served on the original Finance Committee of the National Women’s Political Caucus, and was a “founding mother” of the Women’s Center and Referral Service.

 

She worked as the Race Equity Specialist for the Maryland State Department of Education, Director of Multicultural Education at the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium, and was the first Executive Director at the Washington, D.C., national headquarters for the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). For a number of years, she coordinated Homeless Education for Baltimore County.


  

Frances Hughes Glendening
President of the Board of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center
Former First Lady of Maryland and CEO of Jobs for America's Graduates
  

Former First Lady of Maryland, Frances Hughes Glendening is the current president of the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center’s Executive Board. She also serves as chief executive officer of Jobs for America’s Graduates in Washington, D.C., a school-to-career program implemented in high schools, alternative schools, community colleges, and middle schools across the United States and the United Kingdom, and is a senior fellow and adjunct faculty member of the University of Maryland, School of Public Policy, James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership.

She co-founded the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center and has served on the board of directors since 2004. Under Glendening’s leadership, Women of Achievement in Prince George’s County, Maryland, History, a book showcasing exemplary women from throughout the county’s history (1650 – 1990), was published in 1994. In 2002, she led the effort to publish Women of Achievement in Maryland History, a women’s history book profiling exemplary Maryland women from throughout the state’s history. This was the first book of its kind in the United States devoted to the history of women in a specific state. 


Katie Curran O'Malley
First Lady of Maryland and Associate Judge of the District Court of Baltimore City
Annapolis, MD

Katie Curran O'Malley is the current First Lady of Maryland and an Associate Judge of the District Court of Baltimore City. Previously, she worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Baltimore County and was a prosecutor for 10 years.

Before her appointment to her current position as an Associate Judge of the District Court of Baltimore City, Judge O’Malley served on the Executive Committee of the Women’s Bar, the House of Ruth, The Caroline Center, the Baltimore Zoo, and on the board of Notre Dame Prep. She is currently a member of the Baltimore City Bar Association, in addition to being an Executive Board Member of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center.


Kendel S. Ehrlich
Former First Lady of Maryland
Annapolis, MD

Kendel S. Ehrlich is the former First Lady of Maryland. An attorney, she was active in various policy issues while serving as First Lady.

From 1990 to 1995, Kendel Ehrlich served as Assistant Public Defender in Anne Arundel County. She also was a a prosecutor with Harford County for four years. From 1997 to 2007, Ehrlich worked for Comcast Cable in various capacities, initially as a lawyer, then part-time as a consultant, and later as a television show producer. She is a member of the Board of Directors for BankAnnapolis.

Since leaving public office, Ehrlich and her husband, former Governnor Robert Ehrlich, have hosted a Saturday radio show on WBAL-AM.


Shoshana S. Cardin
Honorary Chair, Maryland Women's Heritage Center Development Committee
Former Chair, Maryland Commission for Women
Baltimore, MD

Renowned nationally as the First Lady of Volunteers, Shoshana Shoubin Cardin has been involved in public service for most of her adult life.  Cardin founded the Shoshana S. Cardin School, the first and only independent Jewish school in Baltimore. She served as Chairwoman of the Maryland Commission for Women, and later went on to form and become the first chair of the Maryland Volunteer Network. 

Cardin was the first woman to assume the Chair of the Board of Associated Jewish Community of Baltimore in 1983; the first female President of Council of Jewish Federations in 1984; the first female Chair of the National Council of Soviet Jewry (NCSJ) in 1988; the first female Chair of the Council of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations in 1991; the first female President of The National Center for Learning and Leadership (CLAL) in 1992; and the first woman to Chair the United Israel Appeal in 1994. Today, Cardin serves as the immediate past chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Shoshana S. Cardin School.


Michelle Duffy Orr
Treasurer, Maryland Women's Heritage Center
Reisterstown, MD

Michelle Duffy Orr is a public relations, fundraising, and business planning consultant. She worked for Constellation Energy/Baltimore Gas & Electric Company for more than 20 years. A certified public accountant, she holds a master’s degree in administrative science from The Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Towson University. Michelle Duffy Orr served as Vice Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, and worked on all of former Governor Robert L. Ehrlich’s election campaigns. In addition to serving on the board of the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center, she is a board member of The Shoshana S. Cardin School in Baltimore and sits on the fundraising committee for Boys Town, Jerusalem.


  

Audrey E. Scott
Co-Chair, Maryland Women's Heritage Center Development Committee
Queenstown, MD

Audrey E. Scott has worked tirelessly on the local and state level to improve her community and the state of Maryland. Her career in public service began in the 1970s when she helped to establish the Bowie Health Center. She served as the Chairman of the Bowie Health Center for 24 years. 

Scott was a Bowie City Councilmember for one year before being elected Mayor of Bowie in 1976. She was the first woman to serve as Mayor of Bowie, and served three terms as Mayor. Scott joined the Maryland Municipal League in 1976 and became president of the League in 1979. In 1981, she was appointed to the Department of Housing and Urban Development as Special Assistant in Community Planning and Development, from which she was quickly promoted to General Deputy Assistant Secretary.

From 1994 to 2002, she was a member of the Prince George’s County Council representing the Fourth Council District. In 2001, she became Vice Chairman of the Council. In 2003, she was chosen to serve as Maryland Secretary of Planning. In November 2009, she was appointed as head of the Maryland Republican Party.


  

Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick
Maryland State Superintendent of Schools
Baltimore, MD

Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick is Maryland’s first female state superintendent and the longest serving appointed schools chief in the United States. In 2005, Maryland’s education headquarters was renamed the Nancy S. Grasmick State Education Building.

Dr. Grasmick’s career in education began as a teacher of deaf children at the William S. Baer School in Baltimore City. She subsequently served as a classroom and resource teacher, principal, supervisor, assistant superintendent, and associate superintendent in the Baltimore County Public Schools. In 1989, she was appointed Special Secretary for Children, Youth, and Families and, in 1991, the Maryland State Board of Education appointed her State Superintendent of Schools.

She received a doctorate from the Johns Hopkins University, master’s degree from Gallaudet University, and bachelor’s degree from Towson University. She serves on numerous boards and has been appointed to several commissions.

Dr. Grasmick has received many awards for her visionary leadership, including the 2009 Presidential Citation Award from the National Association of School Resource Officers, the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education, Civitas International Leader Award, the National PTA Life Achievement Award, among many others. In 2004, Dr. Grasmick was inducted into the Maryland Women’s Hall of Fame.


  

Susan Morris Shaffer
Director, Parental Information Resource Center
Deputy Director, Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium

Susan Morris Shaffer is the Director of the Parental Information Resource Center for Maryland and the Deputy Director of the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium. She is nationally recognized for her work in the development of comprehensive technical assistance and training programs on educational equity and multicultural gender-related issues.

She has authored or co-authored several publications related to gender equity, mathematics and science education, women's history, multicultural education, and disability. She has managed a number of grants from the U.S. Department of Education and has spent more than 30 years teaching and working in public schools. Shaffer holds an undergraduate degree in history and a graduate degree in education from the University of California, Berkeley.


  

Sharon R. Pinder
President and CEO, The Pinder Group, LLC
West Friendship, MD

Sharon R. Pinder is the President and CEO of The Pinder Group, LLC, where she leverages decades of business development, marketing and technology experience to provide services to the private, public, educational and non-profit sectors.

She is best known for her work as the architect of Maryland’s minority and small business reform movement. She was appointed Special Secretary of the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs (OMA). 

She has worked at Fortune 500 corporations, including General Electric (GE), Traveler's Insurance, and provided strategic leadership as the former president of a Baltimore-based software engineering firm MYCOM Mid-Atlantic. She holds a master's degree in technology management from University of Maryland, University College, and is a Professor of Practice with the School of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Maryland, University College.


  

C. Edward Senseney

Financial and Operations Audit Manager, Legg Mason, Inc.

C. Edward Senseney, a Certified Public Accountant, is Financial and Operations Audit Manager at Legg Mason, Inc. Prior to joining the internal audit department at Legg Mason, he worked as a Manager within the Internal Audit, Regulation and Compliance practice of KPMG LLP in Baltimore where he managed and executed multiple compliance attestation engagements performed on beneficiaries of grants received from a federally chartered company. He has more than 10 years of combined experiences within the internal audit discipline.

Senseney is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Maryland Association of CPAs, and Institute of Internal Auditors, as well as the accountant for the Maryland Women's Heritage Center. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in management from Loyola College in Maryland.


  

Mark L. Shaffer

 Mark L. Shaffer is the firm principal at The Shaffer Law Firm where he successfully prosecutes and defends civil and criminal actions before trial and appellate courts in all District of Columbia metropolitan area jurisdictions, and other States around the country. His areas of expertise include government contracts, real property disputes, intellectual property, and employment law. He also teaches Trial Practice for the George Washington University Law School as an Adjunct Faculty Member. He previously has lectured on the rights and obligations of government contractors, protecting intellectual property and trade secret rights, minimizing liability exposure in real estate acquisition and development transactions, and legal ethics.

In addition to the Maryland Women's Heritage Center, he serves on the Board of Directors and/or as General Counsel for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the National Capital Area and Harmony Through Education. He also serves on the Town of Martins Additions Land Use Task Force.


 

Helen L. Holton
Councilwoman, Baltimore City
Chair, Maryland Commission for Women
Baltimore, MD

Helen L. Holton has served as a member of the Baltimore City Council representing the 8th District since 1995. A certified public accountant, she is employed with Abrams, Foster, Nole & Williams, P.A.  She is also an ordained minister. Holton is the current chair of the Maryland Commission for Women and serves on the University of Baltimore Alumni Association Board of Governors. She is involved with the Maryland Food Bank, Baltimore Workforce Investment Board Youth Council, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Links, Inc., as well is a member of The Great Blacks in Wax Board of Trustees and the Maryland Humanities Council Martin Luther King, Jr. 40th Anniversary Advisory Council. Holton received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore and master’s degree in business administration from The Johns Hopkins University. She also has master’s degrees in theology and urban ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary & University.


Linda Shevitz

Linda Shevitz is Title IX Coordinator at the Maryland State Department of Education and past national chair of the Association for Gender Equity Leadership in Education. She also serves as a founder, board member and program chair of the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center.
